If you cringe when you hear the word period, then stop reading. Look away, just like you have done before. If you want to keep on reading, then ask yourself - why are we so ashamed to talk about our periods? It's a sign of life, why has it become a taboo subject to talk about? It's real-life for women, and there is nothing to be ashamed of. Yes, it hurts, its messy, it’s not always comfortable and convenient – but you know what? It's OURS.

Fun fact: The words Menstruation & “Menses” come from the Greek language and Latin, which means moon (mene) and month (menses).
“The great mother whom we call Innana gave a gift to woman that is not known among men, and this is the secret of blood. The flow at the dark of the moon, the healing blood of the moon’s birth - to men, this is flux and distemper, bother and pain. They imagine we suffer and consider themselves lucky. We do not disabuse them." -Anita Diamant
The Moon and menstruation
All life form has cycles of birth-growth-death-renewal.
In ancient times women menstruated together on the New Moon and ovulated on the Full Moon. They respected the flow and its connection to the natural world.
Syncing with the moon helps you get in touch with your natural rhythm, and to be in more harmony with nature. The Moon's cycle is 29 1/2 days just like the female cycle.
Periods can tell you how your body is doing, embrace your periods, and it's beauty! It’s a sign of the creation of life!
We are badass beings that can hold and create life. Learn to love and accept your blood. There is NOTHING to be ashamed of!
Honoring your period can be healing, since we have been ashamed of it for so long, we need to heal that wound. It’s a fun way to reconnect to your body because you are a creative force of nature! You can honor it by creating a ritual, a time of rejuvenation, purification, rest, and creativity. A good way to create a ritual is to focus on self-love, take some time for yourself, maybe get a massage, a bath, or wear a special crystal every month.
Imagine it being like we have all the seasons in one month, remember how each season feels like, how your energy fluctuate with the seasons. There are times when we are outgoing, when we have energy to create, other times we need time to rest and hibernate, and listen to our bodies.
(Spring – Maiden, Summer – Mother, Fall - Maga, Winter- Matron.)
Different Moon/Period Cycles
New Moon (White Moon Woman) – Bleeding with the new moon and ovulation with the full moon. This cycle is linked to fertility and motherhood since it’s been shown that the Earth is most fertile during full moons. Focus on self -love when bleeding, and dig deep into your intuition, nurture yourself. Anxieties and memories might rise up during this time, looks at these feelings, and reflect. A strong time for healing and renewal. A time to manifest and plant new seeds for the future. (Inward energy/yin)
Crescent Moon Menstruating during this time means a time to think, learn, and plan new beginnings & growth, new processes. You might be open to important learning and receive knowledge. (Inward energy/yin)
Full Moon (Red Moon Woman) – Bleeding with the full moon, ovulating with the new moon.
In ancient times this cycle was associated with shamanism, high priestess, and healers.
This is a time for creation, the energy is outgoing, vibrant, and creative. Time to claim your power, harness this fiery energy by creating. Time to release, let go of the old, and make room for the new. The full moon turns negative energies into positive, rage into creativity. (Outward energy/yang)
Waning Moon Maturity and harvest, time for persistence, taking action. During this time of bleeding it’s time to tend to the blooms after the full moon energy, to turn visions into reality. Be persistent, the harvest is right around the corner. (Outward energy/yang)
6 tips to connect to your cycle and your womb:
1. Track your cycle (you can do it in a journal or with an app, I recommend MyFLO)
2. Use natural products, not bleach filled tampons and pads – be kind to your vagina!
3. Observe your cycles - how do you feel throughout the month?
4. How does your cycle relate to the moon cycle?
6. When do you bleed, when do you ovulate? Know your flow.
Don’t judge, just observe. How do you feel during each cycle: physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually?
The phases/cycles will change during your life, depending on where you are in your life. Sometimes you will be in a more nurturing time, a time to listen, to be a student.
Other times you will need to step into a more healing role and harness your power.
It's normal to change the phases and don’t judge if you are not in the phase you want to be. Because that most likely means you are exactly where you are supposed to be.
Listen to what nature is telling you, listen to the callings. Be in the flow, and be proud of you period. It’s OK to feel all the feelings, our emotions are connecting us to our spiritual selves. The so called premenstrual syndrome is because we are not flowing and really listening to what your body wants and needs. We have been forced to live in a man’s world, a more linear word where every day should be the same, where we our SHE power has been forgotten.
We are not meant to feel and be the same. Somewhere along in history, we put a shame on it. Also, not being outside in nature enough, being in front of fake light all day, instead of the sun and the moon, we have lost contact with nature. Most women do not even want to talk about it, they hide their tampons. Like it’s a secret like we are having a disease.
Again, yes, it hurts, it's messy, it’s not always comfortable and convenient – but it OURS! Let's stop shaming our daughters and sisters.
It’s our blood, and it’s our responsibility to take our power back and honor it.
