Learn how to use the energy of the dark moon each month and how to create your own dark moon ritual

Did you know that the dark moon is a great time to release what's no longer serving you? Are you interested in learning more about the rhythms of the moon, and how to use the energy to tap into the beautiful flow of the universe? Here is a simple ritual to do at home.

Connecting and working with the energies of the moon has been a big part of my cyclical living. It has been a healing tool on my journey and a reminder of how connected the phases of the moon is to a woman's menstrual cycle.

It's not about worshipping the moon, but rather understand the connection to our own lives and that we can use it as a guide to have compassion for ourselves and also remind us that we constantly ebb and flow and we can allow the energies to work in our lives by creating rituals.

"Moon Phases refers to the different appearance of the Moon as seen from Earth. There are 8 main phases of the moon: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. These phases repeat themselves about once every 29.5 days."

You can create your own rituals throughout the month, in this post I will share a way to release with the dark moon - and you can read about how to manifest with the new moon HERE.

The different phases of the moon:

New Moon - Begin again and think about what it is you want to call into your life.

Waxing Crescent - Allow your dreams to unfold, and let go of attachment, trust that the universe is working for you.

First Quarter - You might feel resistance and doubt coming up, allow yourself to breathe into discomfort and take small steps towards your dreams.

Waxing Gibbous - Great time to take some aligned action

Full Moon - The full moon can illuminate things that are not "working in our lives". Have you ever noticed that you might feel more easily triggered around the full moon, or maybe you can't sleep? I have friends that work in hospitals that have told me that "things get weird around full moons". The full moon is a great time to "take inventory" of what is no longer working in your life.

Waning Gibbous/disseminating

Recenter your energy, what cam e up during the full moon? What are you getting ready to release from your life?

Waning/Third Quarter - A time to look at your past and think about your future. Can you see patterns in your life that is holding you back? Allow yourself to bring self-awareness to your patterns

Waning Crescent/ Balsamic (also called the Dark Moon) - Reflect, rest & RELEASE! This is a great time to do a ritual to release what is no longer serving you so you can allow yourself to call in new beginnings with the new moon.

Dark Moon = For me I have seen it to be the end of the waning crescent time, right before the new moon.

DARK MOON RITUAL

Step #1: Smudge yourself and the space.

Dark Moon Smudging Prayer (say out loud):

“Under the dark moon, I ask to be cleansed, I ask to be free, I ask for release from all that plagues me. I ask for a clear mind. I ask for a clear heart. I ask for help wading through the dark. I ask to be free. I ask to be more me. I ask to shine as I was destined to. I am now cleansed. I am now renewed. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”

Step #2:

What came up for your during the full moon? What triggers, patterns, trauma came up that you are ready to release?

Step #3:

Write down things you want to release on a paper that you will burn. This could be ways of being, feeling and acting that are blocking you from living your purpose (many times these things keep resurfacing in your life, so don’t judge when you release them during every full moon). It could be things that are persisting, or continue to show up in your life - toxic habits you want to break, toxic relationships, or just release the idea of attachments and control.

Questions to contemplate:

  • What are you holding onto that is weighing you down?

  • What is preventing you from shining more of your energy out into the world?

  • What are you scared of?

  • What (or who) are you angry at?

  • What doubts about yourself do you have?

  • What stories are you ready to let go of?

  • What grudges are you holding onto?

  • What is keeping you playing small?

Step #4:

Now take that piece of paper and burn it (please use a fire-safe bowl and water next to you). Watch it burn and feel the release. Once it’s done burning, fill your heart with gratitude knowing that everything you have ever wanted is already here, right now.

Step #5:

Put your hand on your heart, breathe and say thank you. Thank your higher self, thank Mother Earth, thank the Moon, thank the sun and thank the rest of the universe.

Step #6:

Now get up and dance! Shake your arms, hands, legs, shake that booty! Release any stagnant energy.

Step #7:

Dark Moon Cleansing Bath

  • Take some Epsom salt, fresh flowers (roses have the highest vibration), and add an essential oil you like (we suggest rosemary, rose, lavender, frankincense). Make sure you get a good quality oil!

  • Close your eyes and say "I am ready to release what no longer serves me. I am ready to release stagnant energy, pain, shame, guilt, and whatever else is holding me back and I invite love and compassion to fill me up instead.”

  • If you'd like you can invite a spirit , animal spirits, Source, guardians, etc. to be present.

Fun fact: During the Full Moon, it’s a great time to charge your crystals! Smudge them and then place them outside under the moonlight! This will supercharge them! Just like we all have to charge our batteries, they do too.

Check out this post on how to manifest with the new moon - because it's a beautiful way to brings things in when we have released what's no longer serving us.
